Author Interview With Susannah Ailene Martin
This week, we welcome Susannah Ailene Martin, author of The Lifeguard: A Short Story.
What is the best sentence you’ve ever written?
Susannah: Gosh, that’s a really hard question. I tend to think of my writing as a whole thing. I could tell you my favorite whole story I’ve ever written, but a single sentence is hard. How about I just tell you my favorite line from the story I’m writing right now:
“We’re trying to get him to stop hugging strangers, but you know, he’s three, so he doesn’t listen well.”
This is from the second episode of a series called Deep Hollow I’m publishing on Wattpad. It’s about dragon people.
Name one thing that you must always have to write (Something unique to your writing practice).
Susannah: Ear buds. It’s odd, but I don’t even have to be listening to music. They just help me to focus for some reason. Part of it, I know, is because if I’m writing in a public place, people tend not to bother me if they see I have ear buds in. It’s hard to write if I’m constantly being distracted by people wanting to talk to me.
What four words best describe you?
Susannah: Fun. Helpful. Creative. Persistent.
If you could talk to any author alive or in Heaven, whom would you chat with?
Susannah: C.S. Lewis. No contest. I loved reading the Chronicles of Narnia when I was a kid. Later on, I greatly enjoyed the Space Trilogy as well. I’ve read just about everything he’s ever written, as far as I know. I remember when I was a kid, I wanted to send him a letter saying how much I liked The Magician’s Nephew. I was heartbroken when I found out he was already dead.
