Deep Blue by Jennifer Donnelly
Deep Blue is a YA fantasy novel by Jennifer Donnelly. It weaves fantasy with mythology throughout the story, and maybe it’s the creative in me, but I have always had a soft spot for mythology.
Serafina is a Mediterranean mermaid whose about to become the next ruler of her kingdom. In doing so, she must bind herself to a man, Prince Mahdi. Unsure of the Prince’s feelings for her, Serafina worries about their betrothal, but more than that, she is haunted by the nightmare that plagues her sleep the night before her ceremony.
When dark forces attack her ceremony, and a poisoned arrow pierces her mother, Serafina is thrown into a world she doesn’t yet understand. The nightmare return to warn her of an ancient evil’s return, but it’s also a call to arms for her. Guided only by her dreams, she searches for the five other mermaids that are supposed to join her in the fight to destroy the ancient evil for good.
This is a great read. Through Ms. Donnelly’s words, I plunged deep into the ocean and swam with the sharks. Everything about the book brought the mermaid world to my mind. I swam fast and sang magical spells with the best of them. This novel truly helped me escape after a long day of work.
I love that the book series is bout powerful woman and not just men protecting royalty. Serafina’s struggles are real and heartfelt, but so are the other characters’ as well.
This is a great story for anyone who enjoys a good, clean, fantasy read! I give it five stars!
