Author Interview with Andrea Y. Jones

This week we welcome Streets of Grace author Andrea Y. Jones to be interviewed. Thanks so much for taking the time to answer some questions and letting us get to know you better.

What four words best describe you?

Andrea:Stubborn, Loving, Confident, Stubborn – it probably deserves to be stated more than once.

What was the hardest scene to write in your book?

Andrea:29thStreet – my readers know why. They often report it was the most difficult chapter to read. Mainly because of the disturbing life events that all occurred on that street.

What’s your favorite device in your writing space?

Andrea:My iPhone, I must have music. But not music that I know all the words to because then I’ll sing along and lose focus. I best work to Imagine Dragons, they’re my productivity soundtrack.

How long have you been writing?

Andrea:Since I first learned to write full stories, around 7 years old.

More about Andrea

Andrea Y. Jones was born in Riverside, CA in 1977. In 1995, she attended Cal Poly Pomona where she originally began studying journalism to fulfill her dream of becoming a writer. She did a visitation at San Francisco State University, in the fall of 1998, and fell in love with the creative culture the Bay Area had to offer. Returning home with a further inflamed passion for writing, she changed her major so that she could graduate earlier to finish the biography she was working on. Jones later attended Cal Baptist University after the birth of her only child in 2003, to pursue a degree in Early Childhood Studies Intervention. She became interested in education, specifically those students who faced additional life challenges outside of the classroom that affected their ability to function inside the classroom. She began working with students with difficult behaviors. Jones believes behavior is often children’s only form of communication, so she developed a youth camp that would teach children between the ages of 11-18 how to deal with their frustrations in life, and to better learn to communicate without destructive behavior patterns. When Jones is not working with teenagers with challenging behaviors, she’s working with inmates to help them acquire their high school equivalency certificates. She is passionate about helping others discover love and forgiveness in order to fulfill their purpose in life, and she uses her youth camp and work with inmates as a platform for that passion.

Jones was a contributing author along with 19 other authors in the anthology Survival: Living Life by Designwhere she included the chapter “Benecia Street”. Streets of Grace – Volume 1: The Formative Years is Jones first full novel. In it, she begins to chronicle the 34 different streets she’s lived on throughout her life and how God has been there through every trial and challenge she has faced. Although His presence was not felt at the time, Jones believes that grace, mercy and compassion is what ultimately helped her to survive some of the struggles she faced growing up with a mentally ill mother who turned to crack as a form of self-medication. They faced poverty, and sometimes homelessness while attempting to traverse life. When faced with abuse and the tragic death of a close loved one was too much to bare, Jones mother became even more distant leaving a young Jones to often times fend for herself. Rather than repeat the cycle of dysfunction that plagued her family, Jones chose a different path that was not always easy to navigate. She has attributed her resiliency and strength to being able to forgive and heal and most of all laugh. In her blog, she writes about life’s everyday challenges in a hysterical and irreverent manner. She often states in here posts “I love Jesus but I cuss a little.”

Jones is currently in the process of completing the second volume in the Streets of Grace series and anticipating its release Fall of 2018. She currently resides in Southern California with her husband and son.

Streets of Grace Book

In this first book, Ms. Jones describes her humble beginnings as she journeys through triumphs and tragedies. She describes her mother’s struggle to raise two children while battling depression, joblessness, and homelessness.

The battle to keep their small family together was constant in the midst of sometimes unsavory and unsettling characters, whose sole purpose was set on their destruction.

Jones gives a vivid account of her childhood while presenting situations that will make you laugh, cry and cheer, as she leads you through the many “Streets of Grace.”
